Fly Tying Skills Award Program, Gold Award Program
Participants are required to present three samples of each of seven of the fourteen fly patterns shown below along with three samples each of three tier choice flies. In the Gold Award Handbook there are no detailed step-by-step instructions or instructional videos. There are, however, materials lists, proportion description and tying details, and video and written references for participants to refer to if necessary. Participants are encouraged to read and understand all the instructions found in the Gold Award Handbook. It is required that each tier complete both the Bronze and Silver Award Program before moving on to the Gold Award Program.

Simply tie the Flies. Follow the instructions in the Gold Award Handbook. Contact an Evaluator to confirm his/her availability to evaluate your flies and get the mailing address of the Evaluator. Mail the flies and completed Gold Evaluation Fly Transmittal Form (click link below and print) to the Evaluator. We suggest you mail your flies in a compartmentalized box that will fit into a cushioned mailer and mailed First Class Mail. Please write your name on or in the fly box.
Participants may pay the $90.00 application fee one of two ways: Either email a completed Transmittal Form to the IFFF office, make payment using a credit card at the IFFF Store, or mail a copy of the completed Transmittal Form along with a check to: International Federation of Fly Fishers, Fly Tying Group, 5237 U.S. Highway 89 South, Livingston, Montana 59047.
IFFF staff will process receipt of the application fee by date and applicant’s name and upon receipt of the evaluated flies and confirmation that requirememts for the Gold Award Have been met, the participant will be mailed their Gold Award Pin, Gold Award Certificate, their flies and a copy of the evaluations.
REFUND POLICY: The application fee is non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the evaluation. It is the intent of the program that each applicant impoves their skills and be awarded for this achievement; therefore, the Evaluator may provide feedback and suggest resubmittal of any number of the required flies for further evaluation. However, the process must be completed within 90 days from time of original application, at which time the application will expire. An applicant may submit a second complete application (must include flies, forms and fee) following expiration of the first application.
All Evaluators are listed below. After your flies are evaluated, the Evaluation Form and flies will be forwarded to a member of the Evaluation Review Panel. Once successfully reviewed by a Review Panel member, the IFFF office will be notified and the applicant will receive his/her award.
