FFF Awards Procedures

The Federation of Fly Fishers Awards Program recognizes those individuals, Clubs and other organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the Federation, our environment, fishery resources, angling literature and the fly tackle industry.

April 1 - Nomination Deadline

Awards Committee
The Awards Committee is comprised of a Chairperson, President of each Council and the FFF President. Council Presidents may wish to designate another person to sit on the Committee in his /her place, and if a Council President has already appointed a replacement, Please send the Awards Chair their name, address, phone number and e-mail address by April 1st.
Advisory Committees
The Awards Committee Chair, at his/her discretion, may form Advisory Committees comprised of past award winners, senior advisors or other qualified individuals to make recommendations to the committee as a whole of potential award recipients who may have been overlooked in the past, or have not been previously nominated. These committees would follow the same procedure for nominations as specified below except that in the case that no nominations are received in any particular category by the nomination deadline, the Awards Committee Chair may request the Advisory Committee to submit recommendations before the Awards Committee conference call.
Awards Committee Charge
The Awards Committee duty is to uphold the integrity of the Awards Program. It is not necessary for the Committee to present awards in each category every year, rather the committee should present the awards to individuals or groups that best meet the published criteria. If the Committee feels that there is a person or group that is truly deserving of one on the FFF Awards, the Committee may at its perogative nominate such a person or group during their conference call. The Awards Committee will make final decisions on all nominations
Program Schedule
The schedule for the implementation of the Awards Program is as follows:
  • April 1st DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS
  • May 15th Distribution of Nominations to the Awards Committee
  • May Awards Committee Conference Call as part of Council Presidents call
  • Late May Notification of Recipients (if deemed necessary)
  • After Fly Fishing Fair Press release about recipients to FFF Media Contacts
  • Annual Fly Fishing Fair President's / Awards Banquet
  • After Fair, Article to Flyfisher, ClubWire and Webmaster
     
Nominations and Documentation

It is important that each nomination is well documented. The decision on each of these Awards can be very difficult and the more information the Awards Committee has will make the task easier. All nominations must include the following information:

  • Nominations and supporting letters should be submitted to the awards committee chair by e-mail, if possible.
     
  • Full name of the nominee - individual or Club/Group.
  • Address of the nominee - street, city, state, zip code.
  • Phone number and e-mail address of the nominee.
  • Age of the nominee (optional)
  • A short summary of the nominee's merits and adherence to the criteria of the award should be included in the letter of nomination.  This summary will form the basis for any press reslease or article and should be less than one page.
  • Nominations should not exceed four (4) typewritten pages in length.
  • Documentation of individual awards should include detailed documentation of adherence to the criteria of the specific award. Letters of support from other individuals or groups are advisable. It shall be the responsibility of the individuals or organization making the nomination to provide proper documentation. Nominations without proper documentation may not be considered.
  • Only one nomination per submission.
  • Award Nominations will be accepted by e-mail with a MS Word Attachment.
  • Letters of support of nominations will be accepted by e-mail on the accepted form provided on the FFF Website.  or by standard mail.

 

  • NOTE: Self nominations will not be accepted. Nominations for club related awards should come from their home council.
Routing of Nominations
All nominations are to be routed to the Awards chairperson for distribution to the Committee. The Awards chairperson will be responsible for routing nominations to the proper Committee Chairs for review. Conservation, Stanley Lloyd and Robert Marriott Awards will be routed to the VP Conservation for review and recommendation. Nominations for the Lapis Lazuli Award will be route to the FFF Executive Committee. Nominations for the Silver King Award will be routed to the Saltwater Committee for review and recommendation. Nominations for the James A. Henshall and the Warm Water Fisheries Management Awards will be routed to the Warm Water Committee for review and recommendations. Nominations for the Virginia Buszek Perry Fly Tyer's Assistance Award and the Buz Buszek Memorial award will be routed to the Chair of the Flying Tying Group.  Nominations for the Lifetime Achievement in Fly Casting Instruction Award, the Mel Krieger Fly Casting Instructor Award and the Governor's Mentoring Award will be routed to the Chair of the Casting Board of Governors.
Awards
Summary of Awards for each of the recipients will be provide as follows:
  • McKenzie Cup - Recipient will receive framed certificate with a reproduction of the McKenzie Cup on it and the Club's name will be engraved on the McKenzie Cup for display at the FFDC (Fly Fishing Discovery Center) in Livingston, Montana.
  • Man and Women of the Year Award - Recipients will receive a special FFF pin and a suitable gift. (i.e.: gift certificate or fly rod)
  • Buz Buszek Memorial Award - Recipient will receive a special pin and a special engraved plaque. Their name will be engraved on a master plaque on display at theFFDC in Livingston, Montana. The recipient will also receive a life membership in the FFF funded by a grant from the Oregon Council - FFF.
  • Dick Nelson Fly Tying Teaching Award - The recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • The Order of the Lapis Lazuli - The recipient will receive a special handcrafted ring with a Lapis stone with an FFF logo. In addition the recipient will receive a life membership in the FFF.
  • Lee Wulff Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • Roderick Haig-Brown Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • Ambassador Award- Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • FFF Conservation Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • FFF Leopold Conservation Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • Silver King Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • Robert J. Marriott Scholarship Grant - Recipient will receive a monetary grant.
  • Stanley Lloyd Conservation Award - The recipient will receive an engraved plaque and a monetary grant.
  • Warm Water Fisheries Management Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • Dr. James A. Henshall Award - Recipient will receive an engraved plaque.
  • President's Pins - Recipient will receive a special FFF pin.
  • Memorial Life Membership Awards - Recipients will receive a FFF Life Membership with all its benefits along with a certificate.
  • Council Awards of Excellence - Recipients will receive an engraved pewter tankard with a FFF logo attached.
  • Scott Sanditen Youth Education Fund - Recipient will receive a monetary grant from the All Fish All Waters Foundation.
  • LaFontaine Aquatic Entomology Scholarship - Recipient will receive a monetary grant form the All Fish All Waters Foundation.
Additional Awards
New awards may be established by the Awards Committee with the approval of the FFF Board of Directors. Memorial Life Memberships require an endowment of $5,000.00 to fund the award. Recommendations for new awards should be routed through the Awards Committee Chair.
 
Casting Board of Governors' Awards

The Casting Board of Governors bestows four awards each year.  They are as follows:

  • Lifetime Achievement in Fly Casting Instruction Award
     
  • Mel Krieger Fly Casting Instructor Award
     
  • Governor's Pins
     
  • Governor's Mentoring Award

Any nominations for these awards will be forwarded to the Chair of the Casting Board of Governors for consideration.  To find more information about the casting awards please visit the Casting Awards page of our website.

Additional Casting Awards
Although not part of the Awards Program, the Colliander Cup and the Barbara Rohrer Cup will be presented to the top man and woman casters of the Casting Games held in conjunction with the Annual Show.
